Single-cell-resolved genome composition of prokaryoplankton inhabiting the ocean's interior

This paper describes genomes of 9,698 individual bacterial and archaeal cells from the ocean's sunless interior. The atlas resolves depth stratification to abyssal waters, uncovers particle-attached Pelagibacterales, maps chemolithoautotrophy and biosynthetic gene clusters, and identifies a rhodopsin clade specific to the dark ocean.
